Morden, Manitoba

One such rural community is Morden, a small town of around 8,000 people in Southern Manitoba, lying 112 km southwest of the provincial capital of Winnipeg. With an unemployment rate of 3.1%, local employers struggle to find enough workers. Morden’s Community Driven Immigration Initiative aims to aid employers through an active recruitment campaign. Applicants for the Morden initiative make an application through the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP).

While most rural communities in Canada take a more passive role in attracting immigrants — for example, by observing which newcomers are arriving to the given province and only then hoping to attract them to their respective town — Morden is taking a much more active role. For its part, Morden identifies potential newcomers to the town before they make their PNP application, rather than after.

“The program has been very successful,” says Community Development Officer, Cheryl Digby. “Employers are supporting the program by offering jobs to newcomers, developers have plans for housing complexes to house the new arrivals, and the community at large has opened their hearts to new friends.

“Our retention rate has remained high, as applicants are chosen specifically for their high chance of success in Morden. In particular, there are openings for applicants with experience in manufacturing such as woodworkers or cabinetmakers, welders, sewing factory workers or entrepreneurs who have business experience.”

Living costs in communities such as Morden are among the lowest in Canada, a factor that is likely to become more of a priority for newcomers to Canada as the cost of living in large Canadian cities grows faster than the rate of inflation

Update to Australian Immigration Shortages

Update to Australian Immigration Shortages List from July 1

Traditionally the month of July sees the introduction of various changes to Australian migration law. This year will be no different, with the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) announcing several amendments which will come into effect on 1 July 2014. The following changes will affect the skilled categories:


1.Updated skilled occupation lists

The new Skilled Occupation List (SOL) will see the addition of the following occupations:

•Chef (ANZSCO 351311)

•Bricklayer (ANZSCO 331111)

•Wall and Floor Tiler (ANZSCO 333411)

The SOL is available for eligible applicants under the Skilled Independent Visa Subclass 189 and the Skilled Regional (family sponsored category) Subclass 489.

The Consolidated Skilled Occupation List (CSOL) will contain the following new occupations:

•Hydro geologist (ANZSCO 234413)

•Exercise Physiologist (ANZSCO 234915)

The CSOL can only be used by applicants applying under the skilled state/territory nominated categories, the Employer Nomination Scheme, the Temporary Work Visa Subclass 457 and the Training and Research Visa Subclass 402.

2. Clarification of the validity of Skills Assessment Results

DIBP will be formally introducing legislation to confirm that all skills assessment results are only valid for a period of 3 years from the date of issue, unless a shorter period is noted on the skills assessment results letter.

Under the current system, skills assessment results are valid for an indefinite period, even where a expiry date was clearly set out by the skills assessment authority. It is understood that this change to limit the lifespan of skills assessment results to a period of 3 years is in line with the 3 year validity period for English language tests such as the IELTS.
